How to Play Baccarat Online
Learning how to play baccarat online is easy. The rules are simple, so it won’t be long before you’re betting like a pro.
But before we dive into how to play, here’s a really quick background on the game.
History of Baccarat
The name baccarat originates from medieval Italy and is said to be invented by a gamer named Felix Falguiere. He called it ‘baccara’ meaning zero in Italian, as all the tens and face cards equal zero. The name changed when the game hit French shores and became known as Chemin de Fer.
Originally, there were four dealers, players could be the banker, and bets could be placed against other players as well as the bank. In today’s game, the players bet against the house which also fills the role of banker, and there is only one dealer.
So, let’s go into the details of how we play the standard game today online.
Playing Baccarat Online
-
- Find a baccarat casino and select your game: If you’re new to the game, find a game which offers a free demo version. There should be at least one variant of the game to try.
- Choose your stakes: Check the betting areas and the minimum and maximum stakes you can play. Select the chip values you want, and then drag them to the bet you think will win. Cards are not dealt until you press Deal.
- Bet on Banker, Player or Tie: There are three options to bet on: Player, Banker or Tie. The aim of the game is to bet on the hand which gets closest to 9. All cards have the value of their face, in other words Ace =1, 2=2 and so on up to 10. The picture cards (King, Queen, Jack) and 10s, count as ZERO.Once you have placed your bet, click on Deal and the dealer will lay cards for the banker and the player.
- Watch how the hands develop: Both the player and the banker are dealt two cards each. You then add up the total of the card values. E.g. K+8 = 8; 4+2 = 6
It changes when the total comes to more than 9. For example, if you receive 8+4=12, you discard the 1, giving you a value of 2.
Depending on the hand totals, a third card may be dealt. If the Player or Banker has 8 or 9, no more cards are dealt. If the Player has 5 or less, they’ll receive a third card.
The Banker will then choose what to do with their own hand.
- Payout: Once all the cards have been dealt, the winning hand is declared and the banker pays out (or not).
The payout for a winning Player bet is 1/1. You win 19/20 on a winning Banker hand (1/1 minus a 5% commission). You win 8/1 if you bet on the two hands ending in a tie.
- Re-bet, Double Bet or Clear Bet: You’ll receive your winnings straight away. You can then choose to continue playing with the same bet amount (re-bet), which will double your bet, or clear your chips and start again.
